Four in a Row Rules

These are the standard Connect 4 rules, the same ones used in Four in a Row. They’re simple enough for a five-year-old, but the game has enough depth to keep adults playing for years. For the numbers behind the board, see The Board and Pieces.

How to play

Connect 4 rules diagram: a disc dropped into column 5 falls to the lowest empty space in that column
Discs always fall to the lowest empty space.
  1. Choose colours and decide who goes first. In friendly games, the loser of the last game usually starts.
  2. Take turns. On your turn, drop one disc into the top of any column that isn’t full.
  3. Discs fall to the bottom. Your disc drops to the lowest empty space in that column.
  4. You must play. You can’t skip a turn.
  5. Win by making four. The first player to get four of their discs in a straight line wins. The line can go across, up and down, or diagonally.
  6. Draw. If all 42 spaces are full and nobody has four in a row, the game is a draw.

Common questions about the rules

Can you win with five in a row?

Yes. Five or more in a line still counts, because it contains four in a row.

Can you place a disc anywhere?

No. Discs always drop to the lowest empty space in the column you choose. This “gravity” rule is what makes the game interesting.

Does a diagonal count?

Yes. Diagonal lines in either direction count.

Who should go first?

Going first is a real advantage. With perfect play the first player can always win, so take turns going first.
