How to use the cube timer
- Scramble. Hold your cube with white on top and green in front, then do the scramble moves. The little map shows how your cube should look afterwards.
- Get ready. On a computer, hold the space bar. On a phone or tablet, press and hold the timer. The time turns red, then green after a moment.
- Go! Let go and the clock starts. Solve the cube.
- Stop. Press any key (or tap the timer). Your time is saved and a new scramble appears.
What ao5 and ao12 mean
Speedcubers don’t just count their best time, because one lucky solve can be much faster than normal. An average of 5 (ao5) takes your last five solves, drops the fastest and the slowest, and averages the middle three. An ao12 does the same with your last twelve. This is how official competitions rank people: the main result is the average of five.
Inspection, +2 and DNF
In competitions you get 15 seconds to look at the scrambled cube before you start. Switch on inspection and the first press starts a countdown. If you start late (between 15 and 17 seconds) you get a +2 second penalty. Later than that counts as DNF (did not finish). You can also mark any time as +2 or DNF yourself, for example if your cube was one turn away from solved when you stopped.
Scrambles
Each scramble is 25 random moves with no wasted turns (the same face is never turned twice in a row). That mixes the cube well. Read more on how to scramble a cube. To get faster, learn the ideas on our speedcubing page and the algorithms faster solvers use.
