Speedcubing Basics and World Records
Speedcubing means solving the cube as fast as you can. The best in the world average under four seconds. You don’t need to be that fast to enjoy it: going from two minutes to one minute feels amazing.
World records (3x3)
| Record | Time | Who and where |
|---|---|---|
| Single solve | 2.51 s | Xuanyi Geng (China), Guangzhou Grand Open 2026, October 2026 |
| Average of 5 | 3.51 s | Yiheng Wang (China), Hefei Cubing League 3x3 III 2026, 17 June 2026 |
Records as reported in October 2026 (Ruwix: 2.51 single, Ruwix: record history, Wikipedia: list of speedcubing records). Records change often. The official list is kept by the World Cube Association.
The single record broke the 3-second barrier for the first time in February 2026, when Teodor Zajder of Poland solved a cube in 2.76 seconds. Before that, the record was 3.05 seconds (Xuanyi Geng, 2025). Back in 1982, the first world champion, Minh Thai, won with 22.95 seconds.
How competitions work
Official competitions are run under World Cube Association rules. Every competitor gets the same scrambles, chosen by computer. You get 15 seconds to inspect the cube, then you solve it on a stackmat timer that starts when you lift your hands and stops when you put them down. Most rounds are an average of 5: the best and worst solves are dropped and the middle three averaged. You can practise exactly this way with our cube timer.
The CFOP method
Most fast solvers use CFOP, also called the Fridrich method:
- Cross: make the cross on the bottom in 8 moves or fewer, planned during inspection.
- F2L: pair each white corner with its middle edge and insert them together. See F2L cases.
- OLL: make the top face one colour with one algorithm. See OLL.
- PLL: move the top pieces into place with one algorithm. See PLL.
A CFOP solve takes about 55 to 60 moves, compared with well over 100 for the beginner’s method. Other popular methods include Roux (block building and lots of middle-slice moves) and ZZ.
Tips to get faster
- Turn smoothly, not fast. Pauses waste far more time than slow turns.
- Look ahead. While you solve one piece, start spotting the next.
- Learn finger tricks. Turn U with your index finger flicking, and R with your wrist, so you don’t have to regrip.
- Learn two-look OLL and PLL first. About 16 algorithms gets you most of the benefit.
- Get a good cube. A modern speedcube turns more easily and smoothly than an old toy-shop one.
- Time yourself regularly and watch your average of 5 and 12 rather than your best single.
Questions people ask
What is the world record for solving a 3x3 cube?
As of October 2026, the single record is 2.51 seconds by Xuanyi Geng and the average of 5 record is 3.51 seconds by Yiheng Wang. Check the World Cube Association for the latest.
What method do speedcubers use?
Most use CFOP (cross, first two layers, orient last layer, permute last layer). Roux and ZZ are also popular.
How many algorithms do speedcubers know?
Full CFOP uses 57 OLL and 21 PLL algorithms, plus F2L. Many top solvers know hundreds more for special cases.
