How the 3x3 record has fallen

Single or average: what’s the difference?

A single is one solve. An average of 5 drops the fastest and slowest of five solves and averages the middle three, so it shows how consistently fast someone is. Many cubers think the average is the more impressive record. You can track both for yourself with our cube timer.

How records are made official

Only solves at WCA competitions count. Every competitor gets the same computer-made scrambles, 15 seconds of inspection, and a stackmat timer that starts when the hands leave the mat. Read more on WCA scrambles and speedcubing for beginners.

Robots

Machines are in a league of their own. In 2025 a student-built robot from Purdue University solved a cube in 0.103 seconds, faster than a blink. Robots use solver programs a bit like our cube solver, but they don’t count as WCA records.
