A Short History of the 3x3 Cube

Why it caught on
The cube is easy to understand, beautiful to look at and very hard to solve without a method. In the early 1980s, books on how to solve it became bestsellers, and the puzzle turned up everywhere from playgrounds to television. After the craze faded, the internet brought it back: people shared methods, videos and times online, and speedcubing grew into the competitive hobby it is today.
How the puzzle works inside
The clever part is the core. Six centre pieces are fixed to a three-armed spindle, so they can spin but never move position. The 12 edges and 8 corners have feet that hook under each other and round the centres. That holds everything together while letting any face turn. Modern speedcubes add things like magnets to make the pieces click into line.
