Pop-Out Four in a Row

Pop-out is a popular twist on Four in a Row. On your turn you can either drop a disc in as usual, or pop out one of your own discs from the bottom row, making every disc above it slide down. People looking for Connect 4 flip versions often mean variants like this, where the board changes under your feet.

Rules

  1. On your turn, choose: drop a disc in the top, or remove one of your own discs from the bottom row.
  2. When a disc is removed, the discs above it fall down one space.
  3. Make four in a row to win.
  4. If a pop-out gives both players four in a row, the player who made the move wins.
  5. The game doesn’t end when the board is full. Players keep popping out discs until someone wins, or until both agree to a draw.

Strategy tips

Pop-out Four in a Row: removing your own bottom disc slides the column down and completes four in a row
Popping a disc out moves the whole column.
  • Every pop-out moves a whole column, so check what slides into place before you pull a disc.
  • Bottom-row discs are now useful for defence as well as attack.
  • Lines that look blocked can open up suddenly.
