There are exactly 69 ways to win at Four in a Row (Connect 4) on a standard 7 × 6 board. Each is a different straight line of four spaces.

| Direction | How many | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Across (horizontal) | 24 | 4 possible lines in each of the 6 rows |
| Up and down (vertical) | 21 | 3 possible lines in each of the 7 columns |
| Diagonal, rising to the right | 12 | Lines like a staircase going up |
| Diagonal, falling to the right | 12 | Lines like a staircase going down |
| Total | 69 |
Which wins are easiest to miss?
Diagonals. Most players spot rows and columns easily, but a diagonal threat can sit unnoticed for several moves. Always scan both diagonals after every move.

Which wins are easiest to block?
Vertical lines. A stack of three in one column is easy to see and easy to block by dropping a disc on top. That’s why strong players build horizontal and diagonal threats instead.
How the winner is decided
The game ends the moment a player completes any line of four. If both players could complete a line, whoever does it first wins. If the board fills with no line, it’s a draw.
