Beginner’s Method Cheat Sheet
Everything from our beginner’s guide on one page. Print it, keep it next to your cube, and tick off each step. It fits on one sheet of A4.
Hold the cube with white on the bottom and yellow on top (from step 2 on). R = right face clockwise, R’ = anticlockwise, R2 = half turn. U = top, F = front, L = left, D = bottom.
| Step | Goal | Moves | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. White cross | No algorithm: work it out | Make a white cross on the bottom, with each white edge also matching the centre colour on its side. | |
| 2. White corners | R U R' U' | Put the four white corners in, so the whole bottom layer is finished. | |
| 3. Middle layer edges | U R U' R' U' F' U F U' L' U L U F U' F' | Slot the four middle edges in so the first two layers are done. | |
| 4. Yellow cross | F R U R' U' F' | Make a yellow cross on top. Don't worry about the corners yet. | |
| 5. Yellow edges | R U R' U R U2 R' | Turn the yellow edges so each one matches the centre colour on its side. | |
| 6. Position yellow corners | U R U' L' U R' U' L | Move each yellow corner to its right spot. It may still be twisted. | |
| 7. Orient yellow corners | R' D' R D | Twist the last corners so yellow faces up. The cube is solved! |
Quick reminders
- Step 2: repeat R U R' U' at the front-right until the white corner drops in (1, 3 or 5 goes).
- Step 3: make an upside-down T on the front, then go right with U R U' R' U' F' U F or left with U' L' U L U F U' F'.
- Step 4: dot → L → line → cross. Hold the L at back-left and the line left to right.
- Step 5: two matching edges at the back and right, then R U R' U R U2 R' U.
- Step 6: keep a correct corner at the front-right and repeat U R U' L' U R' U' L.
- Step 7: twisted corner at the front-right, repeat R' D' R D until yellow is on top, then turn only U. Don’t panic when the bottom looks messed up: it fixes itself.

Using the sheet
Each row matches one step page in the guide, where you can watch the moves on a 3D cube. If a step goes wrong, the cube trainer gives you a practice cube for just that step, and the solver can rescue a cube that is completely stuck. Teachers can print one per pair of pupils: see our lesson ideas.
Questions people ask
Can I print this for a class?
Yes. The cheat sheet is free to print and share for personal and classroom use.
How many algorithms are on the cheat sheet?
Seven short ones, enough to solve the whole cube with the beginner’s method.
